Kindness

(This week's devotion is a snippet from last Sunday's sermon: Patience/Kindness.") "By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, KINDNESS, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." - Galatians 5:22-23 A few days ago, I watched a video about the “Science of Kindness,” and I was struck by their line, “kindness is one of the few things in the world… that doubles… when shared.” This means that if we do just one act of kindness every day, we not only reduce our stress, our anxiety, and our depression, but we do the same for someone else. When we offer kindness to a sibling/stranger, family member/friend – our bodies are flooded with HORMONES that make

The Fruitful Life

This week's devotion is offered by Rita Bartak, who offered her (very insightful) reflections on the key scripture for our sermon series. "By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." - Galatians 5:22-23 When I was trying to memorize the scripture verses for Pastors Caleb and Caitlyn's latest sermon series, "The Fruitful Life," each time I recited back, I would mix up 8 of the virtues. Never the first one, LOVE. I always got that one in the right order. The more I thought about it, the more I realized and understood why Paul placed love first when writing about the fruits of the Spirit. Love

Bearing Fruit

"the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." - Galatians 5:22-23 I spent a week away with my family last week. It was a wonderful change in scenery as we secluded ourselves along the shore of Lake Huron and the St. Claire River. One of my goals was to go fishing with my younger daughter. I thought it would be fun and easy - like riding a bike. The problem was that I was never good at fishing. The truth was, I hadn't caught a fish in decades. So, I bought a fishing pole and a beginners tackle box that had all kinds of gizmos & gadgets. I watched 2 "Fishing 101" videos on YouTube. And off we went - to catc

Justice

"Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream." - Amos 5:24 (NRSV) Our nation is built on ideals. From our earliest days, Americans cherished and celebrated the virtues of freedom, respect, and justice for all. Every now and then, we're called into a time of self-reflection. We're forced to examine the gulf between ideals and reality - the people we long to be and the people we actually are. Every now and then, these ideals guide us to reform laws - to make changes for the betterment of all. This was the case during the movement for Women's Suffrage. This was the case during the Civil Rights movement. This is also the case today. The killi
