Faith UMC of Orland Park eNote
In baseball, there is a pitch count limiting the amount of throws by a pitcher. In life, I wonder if there is ever limit to the number of words we can say. Several years ago, researchers found that women speak three times as many words as men (21,000/day to 7,000/day). However, there are those times in life when I feel like I've prematurely reached my quota of words. I simply have no more words to say. This past week, we had a number of church members (and relatives of church members) finish their course in this life. While this is an important and necessary part of life, I found myself feeling the weight of grief multiplied with the news of each passing. Throughout the week, as I spent time in prayer, my heart mourned as members of our church family mourned. Even as I tried to speak, my words disappeared. "Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep." Romans 12:15 Our faith in Jesus Christ reminds us that death is not the end of life. Because of Jesus' resurrection, death is a doorway from this life into the next. Still, the loss of loved ones is real. Grief is painful. When you love someone, it's natural to miss their presence, their spirit, their love. In the Gospel of John, we're told that Jesus wept over the passing of Lazarus. Even when he knew that Lazarus would soon be revived, Jesus shared in the grief of Lazarus' family. The good news - we can rest assured that Jesus mourns with us. For all of you mourning the loss of family/friends this day, may God bless you and meet you. May you experience the loving support of Christ, who is the source of our comfort and peace. Prayer
Lord of life, we thank you for the promise of resurrection. Comfort us in our sadness. Strengthen us in our weakness. Once again, we place our lives into your sure and loving hands. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
- Pastor Caleb
