Faith UMC of Orland Park eNOTE
"So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you.
And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It's your basic, all-purpose garment.
Never be without it."
- Colossians 3:12-14
There's an old credit card commercial that reminds us to "never leave home without it."
Have you ever considered what you'd never leave home without? Perhaps it's your cell phone or purse or pedometer. Perhaps it's your watch or wallet or Bible. I knew a person who never left home without his holy socks.
The apostle Paul reminds us that God has chosen a daily wardrobe for us to wear. They include virtues such as compassion (an openness to sharing in the suffering of others), kindness (treating others with patience and care), humility (considering the needs of others above our own,) quiet strength (unwavering gentleness), and discipline (unflappable resolve to do what's good and right.)
Above all, Paul writes, we must put on love. Love is our all-purpose garment. While we may mix and match other virtues, love is the one spiritual garment we cannot neglect. Love is the one garment we should never leave home without.
As you start the new day and select your physical outfit, consider the inner clothing you will wear. Regardless of what else you choose to put on this day, don't leave home without love.
Holy God, we are grateful for the gift of this new day. We acknowledge that this new day is a gift from you. Forgive us for neglecting your holy virtues. Help us to dress in the way of Jesus Christ - faithfully and humbly reflecting your grace and love in all that we do and say this day. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
- Pastor Caleb
