What is a friend?

Several years ago, a newspaper offered a prize for the best definition of a friend. Here are some of the best responses: "One who multiplies joys, divides grief, and whose honesty is inviolable." "One who understands our silence." "A volume of sympathy bound in cloth." "A watch that beats true for all time and never runs down." The winning definition read: "A friend is the one who comes in when the whole world has gone out." We start our Fall Small Groups next week. There are so many good reasons to join a small group. However, the one that I'd encourage you to consider is this - small groups are a great way to make new friends. Does anyone have too many friends? If so, tell me your secret. The reality that most people face today is isolation and loneliness. While we have lots of acquaintances, people are hungry for true friends. A reminder - the church is not a spiritual drive-thru. The church is a community where Christian disciples are formed - with patience, forgiveness, and lots of love. However, for this to happen, we have to get to know each other, care for each other, and pray for each other. We need to foster friendships with one another. Small groups are a great way to nurture these relationships. Small groups are a great way to get connected with each other and with God. I'll close with a really cool quote I found from Max Lucado:

"Christ distributes courage through community; he dissipates doubts through fellowship. He never deposits all knowledge in one person but distributes pieces of the jigsaw puzzle to many. When you interlock your understanding with mine, and we share our discoveries, when we mix, mingle, confess and pray, Christ speaks."

Loving God, thank you for the gift of friendships. We are grateful for the gift of sisters and brothers who know us and love us, serve us and pray for us. We ask your blessing on our fall small groups. Help us to grow in our relationships with each other and with you. In Jesus' name we pray, amen. - Pastor Caleb
