Faith UMC of Orland Park eNote
I have funerals on my mind this weekend. With two services coming up in the next two days, I've been reflecting on the fleeting and fragile nature of life. "The days of our life are seventy years, or perhaps eighty, if we are strong; even then their span is only toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away... So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart." - Psalm 90:10,12 The Psalmist reminds us to "count our days."
I'm not sure if this means that we should COUNT UP and celebrate each day we wake up on the right side of the ground or COUNT DOWN to the inevitable day when we finish our journey in this life. I prefer to focus on the former, but on days like today, I think about the latter. While death is depressing to think about, it's not all bad. It's on days like today that we can give thanks for the gift of each day - not lightly, but whole-heartedly. I praise God for the little things that I so easily take for granted - the birds that sing, the fall colors that dazzle, the gentle wind that cools, the internet connection that works. It's on days like today that we are reminded to treasure the gift of family, friends, and loved ones. My kids didn't understand why I hugged and kissed them so much last night. They will one day. As they grow older, they'll come to understand that life is a precious gift. Friends, as you go through this precious day, may our Lord teach us to "count our days" with humility and gratitude. As we celebrate the gifts of life all around us, may your heart grow wise and strong.
Holy God, we recognize that our lives are brief. In light of your eternity, we are but a moment in time. Help us to live each day with glad and grateful hearts. Help us to love and care for one another with a renewed sense of love and compassion. We lift up those around us who grieve the passing of loved ones. We lift up ourselves as people ever nearing the end of our own journeys. Help us to count our days. Help us to live each day with a sense of wonder and awe, gratitude and humility - not only for the gifts in this life, but for the gift of eternity that you offer us through Jesus Christ. In His name we pray. Amen. - Pastor Caleb
