The Art of Arguing

Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. 1 Corinthians 1:10

General Conference begins next week! As we prepare for this conference, we also continue to reflect on what it means to be in community with one another. Click here if you would like to learn more about the Commission on a Way Forward. Here are some other helpful links:

One of the most difficult parts of being in community with one another is that as individuals we represent a large variety of experiences, convictions, and opinions. When we come together, sometimes there is more about which we disagree rather than agree.

Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to a church which had a lot of internal dispute. Much of his letter is talking about what it means to be the community brought together by Christ, and addressing the disagreement the church members are having with one another.

I am a bit more cynical than Paul. I don't know before Jesus comes again we will be a community united on every front. But I do believe that how we treat one another when we disagree reveals the type of community that we have established.

If we allow for God's grace to unite us together, then when we disagree, we treat each other with respect. We remember that we may believe differently about many things, but we are of one mind and purpose in our mission to be and create disciples.

My prayer as we enter this Special Session of General conference is that we do not let our disagreements create hate, and let that hate divide us. Instead, that we share grace and let God's love unite us.

Blessings, Pastor Caitlyn
