God Loves You, And There Is Nothing You Can Do About It
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us.
- Romans 5:6-8
Yesterday I met with other Associate Pastors in our area. During our conversation, a few of them lifted up a phrase that has been commonly used in their churches, "God loves you, and there is nothing you can do about it!" After some debate about how really, we do something about it (we respond with love), we settled on this phrase as being a solid reminder that no matter what, God loves us. Many of our relationships in life come with conditions. We can ruin relationships and trust with our actions and words. Even between people there is grace when this happens, but human grace has its limits. God's grace has no limits. When we mess up, God forgives. When we push God away, God's love surrounds us. When others say we are unworthy, God knows how we are wonderfully, purposefully made. When Jesus faced betrayal by a friend, Christ gave up his life for us. What we do matters to God. God cares about our actions, how we treat one another and this world we live in. Yet, when we miss the mark, God is waiting to offer forgiveness as we seek it. Always remember, God loves you, and there is nothing you can do about it!
