Love the Least

"Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me."

- Matthew 25:40

Several weeks ago, our church celebrated children during our 2019 Vacation Bible School. We sang and played with them. We laughed and goofed around with them. We reminded them how loved they are and how much God loves them.

This past week, Bishop Dyck (resident bishop, Northern Illinois Conference,) reminded us to love all of God's children, including the migrant children who (according to recent news reports) are being housed in unsanitary and unsafe conditions at the U.S. - Mexico border. As people of faith, we cannot be silent when we hear reports of children, who are unfed, lying on floors, and forced to live in filthy and unsupervised conditions.

This Sunday (6/30), United Methodists are invited to take part in A Sunday of Solidarity for Suffering Children - for all children who are hungry and hurting around the world. In an effort coordinated by our United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR,) we are called to respond in three ways:

1 - PRAY - pray for children (in our community, along the border, around the world).

2 - ACT - prepare and send hygiene kits. While UMCOR does not have access to children in the U.S. government holding centers, UMCOR distributed 46,128 hygiene kits to six church-run transitional centers in the last three months. Instructions for making and sending these kits are available online ( UMCOR also invites us to act by contacting our U.S. elected officials to raise concerns with our elected officials. (

3 - GIVE - through the Global Migration Advance ( UMCOR provides grants to organizations along the U.S. border and elsewhere around the world that are working to care for migrants.

Jesus calls us to love the least and the last. Jesus teaches us that we express our love for God by loving one another - not only family and friends, but neighbors in need. Neighbors are young and old, local and global. So, let's extend our love for all of God's children. Let's Pray, Act, and Give. Pastor Caleb
