United by Love
And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
- Colossians 3:14
This week, I spent much more time than I should have on my day off obsessively watching the Netflix documentary series Cheer. After a couple of episodes, it became clear that for the members of this team, cheerleading is a place where they feel valued, accepted, and loved. They all come from very different backgrounds, with very different personal experiences, but they come together with a common purpose. They dedicate their skills, talents, and passion to fulfilling their mission. Through this dedication to their team they become dedicated to one another. This doesn't mean they always get along, but it is evident that they are bound together in their love for one another. Earlier this month our denomination made headlines across the country declaring that a schism happened in our church. The truth behind these headlines is that there may be decisions made at our General Conference in May that lead to an official schism of the United Methodist Church. Under Coming Soon you can find out more about this from our Bishop and find different opportunities to join conversations about this with conference representatives. This week I was reminded how powerful love can be. The love Christ has for us is a love that inspires the dedication of our skills, talents, and passion. When we are able to put on this love, we find that it transcends the many ways that we separate ourselves from one another. While there are a lot of unknowns with the future of our denomination, we know for a fact that we are called to be bearers of Christ's love. Through whatever the future holds for our denomination, we are called to be a part of the Body of Christ. This body is made up of all of the followers of Christ, who have different backgrounds, experiences, and opinions. It is through this body that we unite as one in our mission to transform the world through Christ's love.
