So Long Farewell

18 Don’t remember the prior things; don’t ponder ancient history. 19 Look! I’m doing a new thing; now it sprouts up; don’t you recognize it? I’m making a way in the desert, paths in the wilderness. Isaiah 43:18-19 Several weeks ago, we talked about Christmas traditions during Taste of Faith. When I shared my Christmas traditions, they centered around being at church for worship services and prayer times on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Growing up, a lot of Advent & Christmas was spent at church! Last week, I was reminded of another Christmas tradition when I saw a movie that was a family favorite, The Sound of Music. This is the story of musical nun, who taught the Von Trapp children how to laugh, love, and, more importantly, sing. As they escaped the clutches of the Nazis, they sang a song that is fitting for us as we close 2020, "So Long Farewell." So, let's say good-bye to the trouble & turmoil of 2020. "So long, farewell. Aufwiedersehn, goodnight." To the hurt and heartaches of 2020... "So long, farewell. Aufwiedersehn, goodnight." To the isolation and anxiety of 2020... "So long, farewell. Aufwiedersehn, goodnight." Let's bid adieu to the cancelled sports seasons and graduations... "So long, farewell. Aufwiedersehn, goodnight." To the cancelled shows and concerts... "So long, farewell. Aufwiedersehn, goodnight." To the cancelled family reunions and gatherings... "So long, farewell. Aufwiedersehn, goodnight." Just a week ago, the winter solstice came and passed. With each new day, the sunlight shines longer. The hope of spring draws nearer. So, let's start 2021 with a renewed hope. There will come a day when we can gather with family again, hug friends again, sing in church again. There will come a day when restaurants will re-open again, schools will re-open again, churches will re-open again. Until that day, let's be prayerful and grateful to our good and gracious God, who sustained us through 2020 and walks with us into the new year! Happy New Year! - Pastor Caleb
